Summer in the PNW has been pretty amazing this year -- amazing and sometimes uncommonly HOT! We've been trying to enjoy it to the fullest with the boys and so we decided to take them to Cranberry Lake, by Deception Pass, a couple weeks ago.
In preparation I read up on taking a newborn in the sun. As you probably know, the books say to keep your newborn out of the sun and not to use sunscreen until they are 6 months old (sunblock is thought to be ok). So, we took our umbrella and made sure to keep Colin out of the sun the entire time. Little did we know the reflection off the rocks/sand can STILL sunburn your baby ... and we found this out the hard way. Poor little Colin had his first major sunburn at just 2 months of age. I was devistated and felt like THE WORST MOMMY IN THE WORLD and took him to the doc the next morning to make sure he was ok. By his behaviour -- his usual happy, smiling, mellow self -- he seemed fine. But he sure didn't look it. Luckily the worst of it (swelling, blistering) lasted about 24 hours and then things started to heal quickly. He was such a little trooper. We're pretty sure now that Colin has my fair skin to go along with that red hair!
This was our setup. In the shade of the umbrella it was quite cool so we even swaddled little Colin, explaining why only his face was affected.
Vin, on the other hand, must be taking after his daddy because even in the small spot that Chris missed with the sunscreen he barely got pink -- and he was in the direct sun the entire 3 hours we were there. He had a blast too. Cranberry Lake has the perfect little wadding area for the kids. It's shallow and warm. We can't wait to go back ... but we'll probably wait until next year!
Vin is obsessed with little cars right now. It's all he wants to play with!
This was literally 3 or 4 minutes into the drive home! He was completely beat.
