harlequin color change

The first few days of little C's life he seemed to have a difficult time regulating his body temperature -- not entirely unlike Vin. Fortunately, Colin's temp didn't spike high enough to warrant the extra tests and trauma. In addition to sharing body heat with all the loving arms holding him throughout those days, it probably didn't help that the outside temperatures were into the 90's, a record for early June, and it took the nurses a little longer than it should have to get the AC turned up in our room.

We didn't dress Colin much for the first week because of this so as I nursed him a few days after we got home I noticed the strangest thing -- half of Colin was bright red and the other half white, divided straight up the middle, perfectly centered. I thought maybe I was just seeing things and I said something to Chris. Obviously he thought the same because he barely responded and said it was probably my medication.

The next day Colin and I had our post pardum check up at the hospital, an appt where they check the baby again for jaundice, weight (he was back up to 8 lbs 7 oz from his departing the hospital weight of 8 lbs 1 oz), breastfeeding skills, and my incision. As I was breastfeeding, the line happened again and the nurse excitedly pointed it out to us. She said it was called the Harlequin Color Change and typically only happens in premie babies with low birth weights. She'd only seen it twice before. Luckily it's nothing to worry about -- just an interesting little unique trait that lasts a couple weeks. Unfortunately we didn't get any good pics of it (not for lack of trying). It comes and goes fairly quickly. But if you look really close you can see it in this pic.
